HEAD OF STEM
RIGHT TO DREAM, GHANA
The Head of STEM will lead STEM initiatives at the RtD Ghana Academy, ensuring high teaching standards and continuous improvement in student outcomes. Reporting to the Head of Education, they will promote innovative and creative teaching methods.
The role includes teaching STEM subjects, primarily IGCSE Mathematics at the Upper Secondary level, setting personalised student targets, and maintaining updated records.
Responsibilities also include designing internal exams, preparing assessment reports, reviewing curriculum materials, leading department meetings, providing feedback on teacher development, and implementing project-based learning to enhance student engagement.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategy
• Provide strategic direction for STEM education within the Academy, ensuring alignment with school-wide academic goals.
• Lead and coordinate STEM department meetings, setting clear objectives and priorities for each term.
• Monitor and evaluate the impact of STEM initiatives, using both qualitative and quantitative data to inform improvements.
• Collaborate with other Heads of Department to promote interdisciplinary learning and holistic education.
• Report departmental progress and key outcomes to the Head of Education and senior leadership team.
• Ensure compliance with internal academic standards and external accreditation requirements.
• Lead the infusion of project-based learning techniques into the STEM curriculum.
STEM Education
• Teach STEM subjects, primarily Mathematics at the Upper Secondary level as per the academy’s curriculum documents and schemes of work, with a teaching load not exceeding 25 periods per week.
• Monitor and set personalised student attainment targets, including term reviews and effort reports.
• Develop and maintain high-quality teaching and learning resources.
• Demonstrate best practices in instructional methods and classroom engagement particularly using project-based learning, and development
• Facilitate staff development sessions to improve STEM teaching pedagogy.
• Produce lesson plans and forward plans aligned with academy curriculum goals.
STEM Development
• Expand the effective implementation of LEGO STEM teaching resources across STEM courses, fostering a creative and engaging learning environment.
• Implement understanding-based and applied assessment approaches within STEM subjects, ensuring continuous improvement in student learning.
• Follow the leadership and guidance of the Head of Education in executing STEM initiatives across all levels of the academy.
• Monitor and evaluate the qualitative and quantitative impact of STEM initiatives, ensuring compliance with any reporting requirements for STEM educational sponsors.
• Co-ordinate and lead STEM Department meetings, providing termly reports on educational objectives and progress to the Head of Education.
Assessment and Reporting
• Maintain updated student records to track progress and achievements.
• Ensure timely marking and feedback on student work, setting clear learning targets.
• Lead the design and administration of internal end-of-term examinations for STEM subjects.
• Oversee the development and maintenance of lesson plans and forward planners to ensure curriculum continuity.
Curriculum Development and Professional Development
• Evaluate, develop, and refine schemes of work and assessment materials for STEM instruction.
• As Head of Department, collaborate with Education leadership and staff to establish termly focus areas and design professional development (PD) sessions.
• Facilitate weekly department meetings, incorporating practical activities to enhance lesson delivery.
• Provide feedback on teacher development sessions to the Head of Education, while ensuring continuous improvement.
Curriculum Development and Professional Development
• Evaluate, develop, and refine schemes of work and assessment materials for STEM instruction.
• As Head of Department, collaborate with Education leadership and staff to establish termly focus areas and design professional development (PD) sessions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education
• Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Mathematics Computer Science, Information Technology or related field of study. (A Master’s Degree and relevant Professional Certifications will be an added advantage.)
Experience
• A minimum of 7 years teaching experience in a STEM subject area in an IGSCE setting.
• Previous leadership experience is an added advantage.
Knowledge and Skills
• Familiarity with STEM teaching resources and other educational technologies.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
• Efficient managerial skills.
• In-depth knowledge of STEM curricula and educational standards.
• Knowledge of AI and Robotics
• Understanding of various assessment approaches, including understanding-based and applied assessments.
• Ability to facilitate staff development sessions and provide feedback on teacher development.
